My friend Becky from down- the -road has been such a blessing to me. A few times a week she brings fresh milk to my house. She and I are learning how to make cheeses and other milk products. We both love homemaking activities and are having fun with food storage as well.
Recently we decided we needed to start canning some of this abundance of milk we are getting. I got a new pressure canner a couple of weeks ago and was eager to get started, but as I have never used a pressure canner I was a bit intimidated. Becky has used a pressure canner, so she agreed to come down and help me get started. Actually, I basically helped her! In about three hours we canned 32 pints of milk. I think next time it won't take as long as I know a little bit more about how to do it. We had a hard time trying to get the lid on the pressure canner....until Becky decided to read the directions!
Now we are thinking about having t-shirts made with "I Can Can" on the front and "Can You Can?" on the back! Yes, I think we were a little tired after we finished. Our husbands (who work for the same ministry) had just arrived home and we were a little excited about our milking adventures of the day and silliness kicked in. But, really, I now realize it is simple and am eager to start canning some turkey, chicken and beef broth that is taking up valuable space in my freezer. I definitely need more canning jars!
P.S. Some have asked for the details, so here is the link to instructions.

Isn't it fun to learn a new skill? Especially such a useful one. I am loving my new Bosch. I haven't tried the nutrmill yet....but I will very soon. I am using my already ground flour first.
So, what do you do with the canned milk? I mean, how do you use it when you open it?
Hi Roan!! My plan is to use the milk to cook with when I no longer have a fresh supply. It is very much like evaporated milk so I'll use it to make sauces and desserts and I can use it to soak my grains before I make bread, etc.
Glad you love your Bosch!! We use ours at least once a day. I need to order a new blender and just this year ordered new whips and cookie paddles and a new lid as ours was broken. I think I have had it for about 7 or more years now!
I am very interested in canning my own milk. Do you have any special instructions or can you point us to the source that taught you how to do this? Thanks
I didn't even know canning milk was possible. Now I'll be looking for more info. I'm afraid of canning. I've never done it before or even seen it done and I'm afraid I'll do it wrong and make someone sick. I have a long way to go...
Nice job on all your canning! I guess I never realized before that you can can milk. I love your t-shirt idea, by the way :)
congrats on your milk cnning adventures! If you get around to canning meat, etc., please let us know how it goes. That is a skill that is still on my to-do list too, and I'd love to hear your suggestions. The freezer is great, but in the event of an extended grid down situation, I don't want to rely on it to store my food.
Wow! I learned a lot from your post! I'm blog hopping and found yours. I'm a new follower. Would love for you to check out my blog and follow back!
Oh, the milk looks great Anita (and Becky!!) Awesome. If I ever start having an over-abundance of goatsmilk I'd like to try canning that. However, as yummy and sweet as my fresh goats milk is, I'm kinda afraid that CANNED it might taste like that nasty canned stuff you get at the store. Blech!! Almost scared to try. Hmmm... may have to can some good cow milk and throw in a few jars of goats milk just to experiment. I'll let you know the outcome of that little venture...
Awesome. I would have never thought about canning milk. Great job.
Great job, Anita! I love the photo! blessings, joie
