Read Aloud

Do you read to your children?   Do you share great stories of adventure?  Do you read stories to your children that encourage them to live lives that glorify God?  Do you read the Bible to your children?

Reading aloud to my children is  a big part of our day.  I generally have a historical fiction and a biography that I am reading to the children in addition to our daily chapter in Proverbs and Psalms.  Caedmon and Jackson get extra time as we snuggle on the couch to read picture books together.

I found this sweet poem that depicts a child's view of what happens when mother reads aloud and thought I would share with you today.  If you are not reading aloud to your children I encourage you to do so.  I have so many precious memories of time spent with my children and a good book.

When Mother Reads Aloud
  Anonymous

When Mother reads aloud, the past
     Seems real as every day;
I hear the tramp of armies vast,
I see the spears and lances cast,
     I join the trilling fray;
Brave knights and ladies fair and proud
I meet when Mother reads aloud.

When Mother reads aloud, far lands
     Seem very near and true;
I cross the desert's gleaming sands,
Or hunt the jungle's prowling bands,
     Or sail the ocean blue.
Far heights, whose peaks the cold mists shroud,
I scale, when Mother reads aloud.

When Mother reads aloud, I long
     for noble deeds to do--
To help the right, redress the wrong;
It seems so easy to be strong,
     So simple to be true.
Oh, thick and fast the visions crowd
My eyes, when Mother reads aloud.

Now the little boys have removed the cushions from the couch and are preparing a nice, cozy spot on the floor for our time of reading together.  Grab a book and join us!!  Do you have a favorite book that you have shared with your children?  A book that has inspired you?  A book that has blessed your family?  I would love to hear about it!!

what a beautiful family you have!!!
I love to read with my kids. We enjoy Anne of Green Gables, Little HOuse on the Prairie and the American Girl series (my girls, of course) and the boys like to read the Frank Peretti series for kids, historical biographies, and the Narnia books.

I believe reading with your kids is so important.

Because of Sam's tourettes, Mother reading aloud..is a big part of our school day. He is an excellent reader, but the tics wear him down and cause him to loose his place often..which is very frustrating for him. So, I do read aloud a LOT to him or we take turns reading.
We are using a World of Adventure Curriculum this year. We are studying on Ancient Rome now. Our current read alouds are The Bronze Bow and Handel and the Messiah story. Also Handel and the Court of Kinds and the Desire of Ages.
I really love your poem...would you mind sharing it with me? I have a friend that's son has tourettes and it made me think of her too. I would just love to post it on my blog ;) Let me know..I won't use it unless you don't mind.
We had several inches of snow today and we are all sick with sore throats and temps here..so we've been taking it fairly easy.
Stay warm,
Love and blessings, Jerelene

Thanks for sharing that poem and your experience with reading aloud to your children. It really is an important part of the school day, isn't it? I hope my children all have fond memories of mom reading aloud to them in the years to come. I'm sure yours will, too. :)

We enjoy lots of reading here as well. We are currently going through the Miller series which has blessed us tremendously.

My girls really loved the Elsie Dinsmore series. We've read books 1-3 so far.

Thank you so much for linking up to Domestically Divine. Love hearing from you.

What a nice post- I read aloud all the time. At times, when I feel guilty and slip away to read to myself (magazine, newspaper, mail) I try to animate it and read it to my children. That way I can do something I want to do and keep them feeling like I am paying attention to them. Of course I only read happy news and events!

Well when the kids were little we read all the time. I have 2 in college now so not so much reading to them any more. Haha, but I also have a 14 year old we do daily devotions together so that is our reading now. Have fun reading with your little ones. Droping by from the Chatty Mommy Blog Hop
