Making Butter

While the biscuits were in the oven this morning  and the bacon was cooking on the stove, I decided to make butter.  Yes, butter!  I have been buying raw milk from a sweet friend and this morning poured off the cream from the top of the jug.  I had let it sit in the fridge for a couple of days and the cream had done its thing and separated from the milk.  I poured the cream into my Bosch Universal Mixer bowl and using the beaters, let the machine do the work.  In about 10-15 minutes we could hear a definite difference in the sound of the machine.  We looked inside the bowl and there was a lot of bright yellow butter swimming in buttermilk.  I strained the butter from the buttermilk (which is pictured in the jar above) and pressed the remaining milk from the butter with a spoon.  I then added half a teaspoon of salt and mixed well, formed a ball and viola!  We had fresh butter with our homemade biscuits and jelly this morning.  It was much easier than I expected and didn't take much time at all.  Now if we only had our own cow....

We used to make butter years ago when we had the goats. The kids loved it. Now I've got the fever again and am wanting a cow. Can't seem to get the guys motivated to fix the fence now though ;)

Thanks for this great idea/tutorial!! Since we moved to the 'country' 6 months ago, we've been getting raw milk from a dairy farm just a half mile away. Lately, I've been wanting to skim off the cream (at least from my milk, not from the kids'!) to reduce my fat intake... but I can't bring myself to pour it down the drain. Making butter is the perfect solution. :-) Thanks again!

Wow! This gives me yet another reason to want to buy a house on some acreage! What a great thing to have just waiting at home! :)

Do you drink the raw milk though?

We just posted last month during dairy month a little tutorial on butter making....but we didn't use raw milk, we used heavy cream (Raw milk sales are illegal here in Ohio). Glad you enjoyed making your butter!

LOL...that last line sounds like something I would say.

It brings a shudder of fear to my long suffering husband!

Great job, kim

I used to make butter when I was little in baby food jars that we shook to death. It was always fun and tasted so good.

I am stopping by from Monday Mingle! I hope that you have a great rest of the week.
