-There are eleven days left until Devin's wedding!
-Audio books are our friends. Jackson teared up when we came to the end of My Side of the Mountain. He didn't want it to end, so I put the CD back in! ; ) I came across a free My Side of the Mountain Project Pack by Hands of a Child that I think we will work on next semester and we will read the two sequels together as well. They are not as good as My Side of the Mountain, but this will definitely fit into our planned study of the KONOS Attentiveness unit.
-This morning the little boys were listening to Kipling's Just So Stories. The reader has a strange voice and Caedmon was scared.
-There are eleven days left until Devin's wedding!
-We have pumpkins....lots of them....80 large pumpkins to be exact. Yes, we will use them to decorate for the wedding, but I am also putting some of them up. One pumpkin made about 15 cups of pumpkin puree yesterday. It's in the freezer now.
-We have become relaxed homeschoolers or maybe even unschoolers. Why?
-There are eleven days left until Devin's wedding!
-We've been getting very crafty lately. Saturday three fall wreaths were made as well as 11 boutoneires. This week we need to make sugar scrubs, salt baths, 7 bouquets and some other items as well.
-Our church is doing a study on Thomas Watson's All Things for Good. Jeff is leading one of the small groups on Sunday evenings. As we have a 30 minute drive to church on Sundays some of us redeem the time by reviewing the chapter on the way to church. Daddy sometimes reminds the children to redeem this time. This Sunday we were surprised when Jackson asked to read the book. He is doing very well in his reading and will finish up level 2 and 2 1/2 of Explode the Code this week. Thomas Watson was a Puritan. It's a big stretch from Dr. Seuss to a Puritan writer!
-There are eleven days left until Devin's wedding!
-I need breakfast help. Some of my family members are not happy about our wheat free diet. Some of them are out of the home every day and are NOT on a wheat free diet. at. all. I need some ideas for wheat free breakfasts. My very spoiled family is used to homemade biscuits, pancakes, muffins and cinnamon rolls...every day! Help!!
-Please share some of your favorite bread free breakfasts and/or a favorite audio book or series for the under 10 crowd in the comments.

It's Monday!!
Snow and ice? Wow!! Predictions this morning are for up to 2-3 inches of snow accumulation for tomorrow morning. It's still November, right? Last Christmas we woke up to a deep blanket of snow which is very unusual for us in Mississippi, but this early would be even more unusual. Lettuce, turnip greens, cabbage, brussel sprouts and spinach are all growing in our garden. Should we cover them? I think Jordan will be doing some research this morning. The chicken coop has some light that can keep things warmed up for them, but with 26 hens I don't imagine they will have any problem keeping warm and cozy. The roosters, housed in one of the chicken tractors until we can get them slaughtered may need more attention, though.
Thankfully, due to our keeping our own "store" there will not be any mad rush to purchase grocery or other items to make it through the storm. We are really enjoying having foods and toiletries in stock and adding to our stock each month. This weekend I also made up about 15 meals for the freezer, so not only are we prepared for ourselves, but I will be able to share a homemade meal with a family who just moved into this area and will be able to share some staple items from our own store with some friends who are having a financially tough time right now. What a blessing!
Our chickens are now giving us around 120 eggs per week! Another wonderful blessing! And we are sharing with others as well as having plenty of eggs for all of our holiday baking. As I mentioned before, I would love for you to share some of your favorite EGG-Y recipes in the comments.
After 4+ years of driving to church, the homes of extended family and vacations in two cars, I can happily report that we now have a vehicle that we can all ride in! I am such a tightwad that everytime Jeff would discuss getting a Suburban or large van I would hem and haw about it. I would much rather spend money elsewhere! But with Caedmon's recent anaphylactic reaction and the mad rush to the hospital we realized that it would be foolish for me not to have a vehicle available at all times. There were at least two days a week that I was home with no vehicle. Now, we have a new-to-us Yukon XL that all 8 of us can ride in. No more taking two vehicles to church and small group or even to grandma's house. We are looking forward to being together more, listening to books on CD as a family or even reading out loud in our confined surroundings. That is one thing I have really missed about having a family vehicle!
We are finishing up the Christmas decorating this morning while Jeff is home laying tile in our back entryway. We hope to get the kitchen painted with new lighting and flooring before the new year as well. And perhaps we'll even get some school work done!
I still have to process the fat from our hog and hopefully turn it into usuable lard for baking and soapmaking. I have some cabbage fermenting in a 6 gallon crock, but really have no idea what I am doing!! Share with me please, if you have successfully made saurkraut the old-fashioned way!
And we missed the start of Advent last night due to being out later than intended so we will double up tonight to make up. Does your family celebrate Advent? It's been a wonderful part of our celebrating Christ's birth for the past 17 years and makes Christmas so much more meaningful than focusing on Santa Claus and gift giving. I shared a little bit about Advent in October in this post.
Our family has been praying for little Noah Estes, four year old son of Jeff and Kate Estes for a while now. Noah has mitochondrial disease and is struggling right now. Here is a link to Kate's latest post. Please add this sweet family to your prayers. I cannot imagine the emotions the family is going through right now.
Now, it's time to get things rolling around here. Some of the older kids have slept in thirty minutes, so I may need to get the whip cracking...LOL!! And some of my older children were up before dawn. Time to get breakfast going and face the busyness of the day. Hope you all have a blessed Monday!

We. Are. Sick.
We spent the weekend visiting my parents, brother and a sister. However, we woke up Saturday morning with two sick children. By that evening, another one was down. We left my mom's house Sunday morning asap to get the sickies home and wound up with another down last evening. Today, one more is sick. Fevers are running up to 102.8. The only one who is not sick is the baby!! Nursing may be keeping him well!
Jeff stayed home today to help out as 5 of them are sick. He took 3 to the doctor this afternoon and waited....no flu and no strep!! We are thankful for that, but this is some type of rhinovirus that will just have to run its course. Lots of liquids, ibuprofin and bed. Should be over in 3-4 days!!!
I am starting to get a little congested so I took a good dose of my tonic....remember my tonic? I don't know if anyone else will take any, but I plan on taking it morning and night to see if it works. Tonight the kids are requesting chicken soup, saltines, grape juice, ginger ale and popsicles. Jeff is out collecting our dinner. BTW, it's raining again. Last week was glorious and we cut out a good bit of school so we could enjoy outdoor time. Tomorrow I think my sick children will watch A Man for All Seasons that just came in the mail from NetFlix. It is about Henry VIII and Sir Thomas More. That may be our school for tomorrow!

Stop the Clock, Please!
Can someone please tell me where the time goes? Our days seem to be flying by so quickly and then our weeks and months fly by as well. Last week was a whirlwind of activity with piano lessons and dentist appointments on Tuesday, three sets of visitors on Wednesday, enrichment classes, choir and helping friends load up for a move on Thursday. I just called a time-out on Friday and we just loafed and played all day. Then Jeff, Caedmon and I bought groceries and stopped for dinner that evening. Saturday we had a quick clean up and mall run, then Jeff and middle children again helped our friends load up, before they all, along with three other families came here for a send-off dinner. Yesterday, Jeff and I both took naps with the little boys and then we were invited to some friends house for an impromptu time of food and fellowship. We were out way too late (having too much fun) and I wound up with some grouchy kids this morning. We covered the basics in school today and had my dryer repaired so now I can wash and dry umpteen loads of laundry tonight. Oh, and did I mention "we" have a baby due this week? Ok, not "we" as in the house, but my oldest daughter, Lauren, just missed her due date yesterday. She is miserable but trying to patiently await the arrival of their second baby boy. Jeff and I will be heading to the hospital with Caedmon, of course, to be a support for her and James during her labor. Praying that all will go well. I keep thinking that life will slow down one day, but so far "one day" has eluded us.
